REVIEW: “Tangle of Need” by Nalini Singh (Psy-Changeling #11)

Hardcover: 422 pages

Publisher: Berkley

Release Date: May 29, 2012

Series: Psy-Changeling #11

Adria, wolf changeling and resilient soldier, has made a break with the past–one as unpredictable in love as it was in war. Now comes a new territory, and a devastating new complication: Riaz, a SnowDancer lieutenant already sworn to a desperate woman who belongs to another.

For Riaz, the primal attraction he feels for Adria is a staggering betrayal. For Adria, his dangerous lone-wolf appeal is beyond sexual. It consumes her. It terrifies her. It threatens to undermine everything she has built of her new life. But fighting their wild compulsion toward one another proves a losing battle.

Their coming together is an inferno…and a melding of two wounded souls who promise each other no commitment, no ties, no bonds. Only pleasure. Too late, they realize that they have more to lose than they ever imagined. Drawn into a cataclysmic Psy war that may alter the fate of the world itself, they must make a decision that might just break them both.

My thoughts

With this installment, Nalini Singh manages to bring even more interesting bits and pieces to the table and I’ve enjoyed this story immensely.

The book features Riaz and Adria, both soldiers for the wolf pack SnowDancer, but we are also treated with many scenes from other past main characters such as Hawke, Sienna, Mercy, Riley and many others. I knew this book was coming out on May 29, so I pre-ordered it for my Kindle and woke up early to start reading, and boy, was I not sorry.

Mannheim, Nalini Singh & Lara Adrian Signing

Nalini Singh (left), Lara Adrian (right)

I’ve been planning my trip to Mannheim for a few weeks now, ever since I’ve heard that the amazing Nalini Singh and Lara Adrian are coming to Germany! Together, a very good friend of mine and I, woke up early yesterday and drove around 250 km to meet these lovely ladies.

My friend and I, we’re both massive fans, so we were naturally pretty excited to meet them. We arrived in Mannheim around noon and the signing wasn’t until 6 p.m., so what should two girls do when in a new city and with lots of time to spare? Go shopping & exploring, of course!

Mannheim is an impressive city with a surprising amount of shoe stores – yes, we’ve been in every single one we could find 🙂 – and a few designer clothes stores. We walked around till our feet hurt, and I’m still in pain today, then sat down to have some lunch. Spaghetti Carbonara was on the menu for me, and it was delicious. Yeah, yeah, I know, but who cares about fitness when you’re in a new city and you’re exhausted? I don’t!

Anyways, afterwards we went to visit the famous university to scout the place as a possible option for the postgraduate degree. Yep, it sure was something! Have a look below:

Mannheim University

I think the picture says it all, doesn’t it? And that’s not all of it. The university used to be a castle and trust me, you can get lost in that place really easily! That done, we then returned to our exploring for another two hours, then went on to join the queue an hour before the actual signing even started. And we were not the first ones there! The line was so long, I couldn’t even see the end of it, but we were luckily among the first ones to get our books signed.

Here is part one of my top twenty new book releases of 2012! Part two will be posted tomorrow, so stay tuned.

1. Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels 5.5) – Ilona Andrews

The next book in the Kate Daniels series features Kate’s best friend and shapeshifter, Andrea. The expected publication date is July 31st, 2012:

Some people have everything figured out — Andrea Nash is not one of those people. After being kicked out of the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea’s whole existence is in shambles. All she can do is try to put herself back together, something made easier by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend, Kate Daniels.
When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano — the male alpha of Clan Bouda and Andrea’s former lover — die unexpectedly at a dig site, Andrea is assigned to investigate … and must work with Raphael. As her search for the killer leads her into the secret underbelly of supernatural Atlanta, Andrea knows that dealing with her feelings for Raphael might have to take a backseat to saving the world …

2. Angel’s Flight (Guild Hunter 0.5, 1.5, 4.5, 4.75) – Nalini Singh

This book has already been released on February 28th, 2012 and it is a compilation of short stories from the Guild Hunter series, one of which is first time in print and another never before published:

In Angel’s Wolf a vampire becomes fascinated with the seductive angel who rules Louisiana. But all is not what it appears to be in her court.
In Angels’ Judgment a hunter must track one of her own gone bad, while surviving the deadly tests placed in her way by the archangels themselves. Unexpected backup comes from a stranger who might just be the most lethal threat of all…
In Angels’ Pawn a vampire hunter faces off against two rival factions and the angel manipulating them both, and a vampire whose help is not entirely selfless…
In Angels’ Dance an angel trapped in the mountain stronghold of the Refuge finds herself under siege by a warrior angel from a martial court.

3. Tangle of Need (Psy-Changeling #11) – Nalini Singh

The next book in this series is one I’ve been expecting for a long time, and fans of Nalini Singh will be able to follow the love story of another SnowDancer couple, namely Riaz and Adria:

Adria, wolf changeling soldier, has made a break with a past as
unpredictable in love as it was in war. Now comes a devastating new complication: Riaz, a SnowDancer whose lone-wolf appeal is beyond sexual. It’s primal. And it consumes them as completely as the impending cataclysmic Psy war—a battle that may alter the very fate of the world.

4. Wild Cat (Shifters Unbound #3) – Jennifer Ashley

I’ve recently reviewed “Pride Mates” which is the first book in this series. I didn’t read the second book in the series yet, but I’m so excited for this one, because I know it will be as good as the first one. “Wild Cat” has been published on January 3rd, 2012:

When Feline Shifter Cassidy Warden saves detective Diego Escobar from plunging to his death, the naked Shifter woman takes his breath away. But she’d been breaking all kinds of human laws, and Diego, to save her from termination, has to promise his department he’ll watch over her.
Diego finds the task harder than he thinks–Cassidy is trying to find out what kind of mysterious hunter killed her mate two years ago, a hunter that could bring danger to all Shifters. Plus Cassidy has scent-marked Diego–essentially telling all other Shifter females, “Hands off.”
Diego risks his personal and professional life getting involved with Cassidy, but he realizes he’ll do anything, even confront the deadliest of assassins and his own inner demons, to keep her safe

5. Midnight Reckoning (Dark Dynasties #2) – Kendra Leigh Castle

Another sequel to a novel I’ve recently reviewed! This series is one I’m sure I’ll follow for as many books that will come out, so I was really glad when this one got published on January 1st, 2012:

Wild and passionate by nature, Lyra Black is not just any werewolf. She’s the future leader of the powerful pack of the Thorn – if she can stay alive long enough to inherit the title.
One of the Cait Sith bloodline of vampire cat-shifters, Jaden Harrison has no interest in the wars plaguing the world of night. But when he rescues Lyra from a violent attack, they’re both captured by an insatiable desire that threatens to overwhelm them and bind them together for eternity… just as ancient enemies prepare to strike. And when they do, the Thorn and the Cait Sith – and Lyra and Jaden’s love – may never recover from the deadly blow…

“Visions of Heat” by Nalini Singh (Psy-Changeling #2) – Review

Paperback: 352 pages

Publisher: Gollancz

Release Date: March 6, 2007

Series: Psy-Changeling

Hailed as a major new talent in paranormal romance, Nalini Singh takes us deeper into the world of the Psy and the changelings in her latest extraordinary novel, where a gifted woman sees passion in her future – a passion that is absolutely forbidden by her kind…

Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous – aching need… exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.

Changeling Vaughn D’Angelo can take either man or jaguar form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar’s instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating, and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith’s sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced – and keep her from Vaughn..”

My Thoughts

“Visions of Heat” is the second book in the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh and a worthy sequel to “Slave to Sensation”. Like with the first book, I was completely blown away. I didn’t expect the sequel to be as good as the first book in the series, but boy was I wrong. I simply did not want it to end.

I really liked Faith, maybe not as much as Sascha, but she was still amazing. Her strength and determination to feel something beyond what she thought was possible impressed the hell out of me. I don’t know many people able to do that. And Vaughn…he was so damn hot! I love my men wild, and he certainly delivered on his part. All possessive, growly and protective. The jaguar in him let loose.

As for the heat, well, let’s just say that this one was way off the scales, possibly even better than the first one. I loved Lucas & Sascha, but Faith and Vaughn were simply magnetic. They were constantly drawn to each other, all logical thought gone. It was mesmerizing to follow. And as for his imagination…well, I strongly suggest you sit down comfortably in your bed while reading this. I sometimes read books in the train while I’m on my way to the university, and as I was reading this, I was actually blushing and laughing. I guess the people on the train thought I was a weirdo, but I so did not care. Their loss, haha!

Aside from the romance and hot sex scenes, the plot was incredibly well structured. I loved the fact that Nalini Singh went deeper into the Psy mentality and issues. The Silence protocol and the NetMind were actually quite fascinating and I found myself wishing I’d thought of these things first.

I absolutely love Nalini Singh’s books. I’m truly addicted. In total there are ten books in this series, with the eleventh coming out in May. I. Cannot. Wait!

So what are you waiting for? Go grab the yourself the first book in the series and then read on, because it’s something truly worth your time.

REVIEW: ‘Slave To Sensation’ by Nalini Singh (Psy-Changeling #1)

UK cover of 'Slave To Sensation'

Paperback: 334 pages

Publisher: Berkley Sensation

Release Year: 2006

Setting: San Francisco, Alternate Earth, Futuristic

Series: The Psy-Changeling Series #1

From the back cover of the book:

A fresh new talent in the realm of paranormal romance, Nalini Singh dives into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind – and none of the heart…

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation” – the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his pack mate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovered that his ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion – and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities – or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

My thoughts:

So let’s get clear on one thing! Before reading the first book in this Psy-Changeling series, I used to read only Young Adult novels. I thought books with erotic scenes in them were completely disgusting, but man, I was sooo wrong.

The transition from YA to paranormal romance & urban fantasy couldn’t have happened with a better book. I just cannot go back to that anymore now that I had a taste of this. I simply loved Lucas and Sascha, the leading characters in this installment.

Sascha grew up thinking there was something wrong with her, especially after being thought to live without emotion. So imagine the surprise on her when she meets Lucas Hunter, this sexy shapeshifting panther with vivid green eyes…yep, she was lost.

As for him, well, I liked the way his inner instincts took control of the situation. With all rational thought thrown away, there was no way he could see her as the enemy. The attraction between them was simply explosive, addictive and sweet. It was fascinating to watch Sascha learn to accept she has feelings, that she is what she is, and that she is not at all flawed. The love between them blew me away!

Nalini Singh’s writing was one of the best I’ve ever seen, and after finishing the book, I was left wanting more. I couldn’t believe it’d ended. Luckily though, there were already another nine books waiting for me, but each book follows a different character so there’s no need to fear that the story is dragging on and on. With each new book, you discover something new, something fresh, and you don’t feel like reading the same thing over and over again.

So go ahead and try it like I did! I’m sure you won’t be sorry!
